Lady Gaga gets fat shamed

Sunday night Lady Gaga performed the halftime show at the Super Bowl. I am not a Gaga fan but I did think she sounded amazing though I had zero interest in the actual performance, it didn’t grab me. It was the Super Bowl I was more interested in football, so I never really took much notice of her outfits or anything. I went online this morning and couldn’t believe that I was seeing articles that Lady Gaga was getting fat shamed. Yes, the small thin woman is getting fat shamed. Lady Gaga looked amazing on Sunday night and if Gaga is fat and has a gut then I am a whale.

This is a perfect example of why so many girls and yes, even boys have body insecurities. You look at this image and see the comments from trolls calling this woman fat. You might get your enjoyment out of riling up some people and getting a few retweets but people like you are why people starve themselves and develop such negative body images.

Today, you are either too skinny or too fat. You will never have a perfect body according to society. Female olympic gymnasts were body shamed for their abs last year.  Scarlett Moffat has been called out for being too thin. Ronda Rousey, a former UFC champion and Olympic judo bronze medalist has been a victim of fat shaming.

And it’s not just women that are body shamed. Men’s Health recently posted an article about the times men have been body shamed. Article HERE.

When you bend over, dance, shift weight to one side, your skin moves. We are not Barbie dolls made of plastic. I know when I move forward my stomach moves, if I wear my favourite pair of jeans they give me a little bit of a muffin top but I fucking love them so bring on the muffin top, and when I sit down my stomach has rolls and I have a fairly flat stomach.

Body shaming is a symptom of our culture’s obsession with appearance. Magazines are constantly offering tips “how to lose 5lbs”, “how to gain more muscle”, “get your summer body”, etc. because they want us to be insecure, buy their magazine and read their completely obvious tips and this is body shaming. Magazines are marketed to us to make us criticise our bodies. We fall victim to the vicious cycle of judgement and criticism.  Social media, is one of the most toxic places. Troll accounts are all over Twitter and Facebook where the sole purpose is to target people, shame them for some form of entertainment.

Trolls will always be around, there will always be some asshole ready to make a comment to bring you down to make themselves feel better. So, if you have ever been body shamed or get body shamed in the future by anyone, tell them to go fuck themselves. Who cares what they think, the most important thing is that you love yourself.
